In Chapter 13, the art class is studying pointillism. This is a form of art where a full image is made of tiny dots. From close range, it doesn't appear like a complete image. It's only when one steps back to see all the dots that the image appears. This is symbolic for the situation Lani and Erin find themselves in. Erin is so focused on her own attraction to Jason, she doesn't see the full picture.
