Implicit bias is defined as “the beliefs that sit in the back of your brain and inform your actions without your implicit knowledge” (77). In the case of race, it can cause a white police officer, for example, to see a young black boy playing in the park not as the child he is, but as a menacing figure, all based on implicit bias the police officer may not even be aware that she holds.
