Oluo portrays a conversation she had with a friend of hers, whom she describes as "a smart, thoughtful, and well-meaning person" (18). When the topic of the conversation turned to race, however, Oluo's friend had suggested that surely if society were to focus on improving the lives of those in the lower classes, then the lives of minorities would improve as well. Oluo had heard this argument many times and she set about providing her friend with all sorts of examples demonstrating why shifting the focus away from race and toward class is and has been an ineffective strategy for achieving social justice.
