Sophie is exuberant and Marina admires her bubbliness. Sophie, however, resents Marina and makes her life uncomfortable. She is cruel to Marina. Late in the novel, Marina sees that Sophie is quite unhappy with herself, and this softens Marina's thinking towards her.
