The narrator carries on and becomes mother and father to her children, making sure the food supply doesn't diminish and making repairs around the house. She starts going alone to the movies. The looks of astonishment she receives makes her want to cry, but she finds some comfort in movies. She takes to listening to the radio all the time to fill the void.
