Daba feels betrayed by her friend and encourages her mother to follow Aissatou's footsteps and leave her husband. Daba probably does not have a choice in that in her culture, children are raised to do exactly what their parents tell them and Binetou's mother wanted the marriage in order to increase her social status and financial situation. The narrator thinks Binetou is a shy, innocent girl who does not have a choice in marrying Modou.
