In the past, donations were agricultural produce, but now it is only money, given competitively by groups of people who do not want to be outdone. The donations will be repaid so Modou's family records them. Then, the money is distributed among the widows. The narrator, being from a well-known family and being a schoolteacher, but, more importantly, being the wife who was married longer to Modou, receives a larger share. This brings her admiration from the crowd, which bothers her co-wife's mother, whom the narrator refers to as "Lady Mother-in-Law". As if in a daze, the co-wife remains silent.
