One clue we see that heidi will leave her home becomes evident in the chapters Tea and Out. Heidi's discovery of a place her mother has actually been is encouraging, but they are unable to garner any information through calls and letter, thus, Heidi determines they must fo there. Unfortunately, Bernadette can't bring herself outside, which causes Heidi to announce her intent to go alone.
