Although serious, this trial still has the feel of a small town affair. What are some reasons for that?

The prosecutor, district attorney and coroner all call one another by their first names in court. The Judge appears to be napping, although Nels knows he is awake. The wind can be heard pushing against the courthouse's beams in the attic, which indicates it is not a large, sturdy place, but a simple building.
