In the play's opening, Andrew rereads a paragraph he has just written in which Merridew explains how a seemingly inexplicable murder was carried out. The segment ends significantly, with the pronouncement. "There, Inspector, that is Merridew's solution."' This brief section foreshadows Andrew's likening himself to Merridew as the master puzzler.
