What metaphors are used in Sleepless Nights by Elizabeth Hardwick?

Hardwick concludes Part II by describing the anticipation and cooling-off periods of the Kentucky Derby. After the race, the horses are led away to their stalls, but no one knows how they feel about having finished the race. This can be seen as a metaphor for death, and the way that no one can communicate from beyond the grave.
