A theme in this book is Marine Elements. Given the location of Stranahan's home and various locations throughout the tidal flats of Biscayne Bay, it is not surprising that there is a strong undercurrent of awareness of the marine elements of tide, wind and water depths. The facility with which Stranahan, his friend the bone fishing guide and Luis Cordova the marine patrol man, make their way over and around the channels is in contrast to the predicaments that inexperienced venturers on to the waters of Biscayne Bay often find themselves experiencing. It is not just for finding fish that the fishing guides are employed.
