What will happen to the villagers in Chapter 7 if Rodrigues does not apostatize?

The interpreter tells Rodrigues that if he apostatizes the villagers' lives will be saved but if he does not, then they will be wrapped in straw mats and thrown into the water. Rodrigues seems paralyzed and makes no move to help the poor captives.
