What happens to the elderly man in Chapter 6?

One morning the prisoners are told to trample the image of the Virgin Mary, but all of them refuse. All of the prisoners are returned to their cells, except for one elderly man. He is made to kneel in the courtyard. A guard approaches him from behind and slays him with his sword.
