In what way are the two priests cautious when they first arrive in Japan?

Garrpe and Rodrigues hide among the luggage and the sailors put up a small sail in order to avoid the suspicion of larger ships. At midnight the boat makes landfall and Garrpe and Rodrigues wait hidden in a hollow while Kichijiro searches for the villagers.
