Silas Marner was a linen-weaver. Weavers were considered outsiders because they came from larger towns. They were seen as pale and thin men who looked like “the remnants of a disinherited race.” Children of the village found Silas especially strange looking. They would peer at him and their parents said he possessed strange powers.
