How is Godfrey Cass a hero in the book Silas Marner?

If we try to see heroism in Godfrey's character, we can only judge him heroic based upon deeds that make a difference in the lives of others. Godfrey would be considered a tragic hero at best. He is weak, indecisive, and virtually incapable of taking responsibilty for his own actions. None-the-less, Godfrey does come through for Eppie financially, and even offers to adopt her (can you adopt your own child?).
