Cultural clash is the novel's main theme. The fundamental differences of race, language, sexual equality and religion separate the Indians from the British who are sent to govern them. In context, the British might be living in India, but isolate themselves within their own community and establish their own “club”, in which, locals are not allowed.
In addition, several Anglo-Indians see Adela to be a race-traitor because she admitted that she was wrong about an Dr. Aziz sexually assaulting her. The Indians are resentful of British rule, as well as their foreign customs and attitudes. We can also see further culture clash within the Indian culture, in which, the Muslims and Hindus are divided.
