Who is Don Blas Vivar/Count of Mouromorto from Sharpe's Devil and what is their importance?

Although, we do not meet the Count until the epilogue, the story revolves around Sharpe's search for this character, who he sets out to find as a favor to his wife, Louissa. In the end, we learn that Count Mouromorto has been held captive on an island located west of Chile.
