The novel Shane by Jack Schaefer

In Chapter One, we learn that Shane is set in the year 1889. the story opens with eleven-year-old Bob Starrett, watching a a stranger ride into the valley. The stranger's appearance is impressive.... powerful, shocking because he isn't a very big man. The stranger asks for water for himself and his horse and introduces himself Shane. Joe, Bob's father, then offers him food and accommodation for the night.
