OIl becomes a metaphor for money, politics, and war. As an important natural resource, oil accounts for much of the wealth—and much of the strife—in the Middle East. Oil is a kind of dream for the average poor Middle Easterner who hopes to become rich, but in reality much of Middle Eastern oil is controlled by foreign interest. In other cases, only a very small percentage of the rich enjoy the wealth that oil production provides.
