Shadow and Act is a collection of nonfiction essays. Although Ellison does not employ symbolism, he does note that the greeting, "Man I'm nowhere", which was often used in Harlem, serves as a symbol of the overall state of Negro culture, referring to Harlem as an embodiment of nowhere.
