People of color, specifically from Nigeria are considered second class citizens. Several characters in the novel, including Adah herself and Mr. Noble, demonstrate the challenges inherent in emigrating from Nigeria to the U.K. at this time. Both of these characters believed they would have greater opportunities in Britain than they had in Nigeria, but they failed to take into consideration the virulent racism they would face there. Mr. Noble suffered a catastrophic injury as a result of racist taunting from his co-workers when he worked as an elevator attendant in the subway, and Adah struggled to find suitable housing because so many apartment advertisements featured the notice “Sorry, no coloureds” (70).
