Drake McBride represents people who have no perception of the environment and its ecosystem, and as a result, have no problems destroying it if it means financial success. When McBride devises the plan to drill in Section 22, he is willing to upset a natural wildlife preserve to get oil that is not even of good quality. “I don’t care what it looks like, or how bad it stinks so long as it’s oil…all we need – is genuine Florida crude to drip on some sucker’s desk…who will then give us such a ginormous wad of money for our drilling rights that even my old man will be impressed” (143).
