In Chapter Two, what is one thing that leads us to believe there is more to Smoke's father than we initially see?

Initially, we believe that Smoke's father is uneducated based upon his speech and grammar. We suspect that there might be more to him than we believed when we learn that he has taught his bird to speak in multiple languages.
