Anna is more like a sister to Caleb now than like a mother. What in the story makes this possible?

Anna is Caleb's sister to begin with but she has to take on more of a mother role after mother died. I think that after Sarah becomes part of the household, Anna can go back to a sisterly role with Caleb.
