To this point, the tone of the book is caring on Julia's part, but it seems that everything around her is inhuman or simply numb, or at the very least, forgetful, although sometimes willfully so. She resents her husband's disregard for her, and does not appreciate being left out of his plans, and she is frustrated by the inhumanity of the Holocaust, and the fact that it took place right there in Paris.
