What is the theme in Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay?

One main theme in the novel, Sarah's Key, is that of escape, as seen in both of our main charaters. Sarah attempts to escape for her past but is unsuccessful. Julia wants to escape from an unhappy marriage and her need to find out the fate of the Vel’d’Hiv children.
