When Rachel was sick, the doctor who came to tend to her reported her, and the police came to take her back to Beaune-la-Rolande. She was too sick to move, but the girl hides in the basement in a potato sack, and when the police begin to search the basement, Mrs. DuFaure distracts them from the search by offering them pate and wine.
