Who is Floyd Tibbits from 'Salem's Lot and what is their importance?

Floyd is Susan's former boyfriend. He is also one of the group who sent Ben into the Marsten House when he was a small boy. Floyd is jealous of Ben and attack him, but the act is more the result of being under a vampire's influence than typical of the man.
