Though Anderson acknowledges elsewhere in the memoir that literature can also be used for escape, companionship, and guidance, the very final poem, entitled “reminder” (289) puts forth the idea that the most important aspect of literature, and the most valuable, is its ability to connect people. She depicts a person shouting out their truth and that truth being received by another human being on the other end of the book.
