Anderson lists a number of skills her grandfather had taught her, saying that her grandfather had been a “quiet forest ranger” (267). He had taught her many things about how to observe and listen to the natural world. She paints a picture of her grandfather pressing her small hands against the bark of the trees so that she “could feel their whispers” (267).
