Within various poems, Anderson recounts the elements of her mother’s personality that had continually perplexed her. She says in one poem that her mother had equated affection with weakness, for example. She also states that her mother had been unwilling to help her family understand her better, instead “resisting all attempts to untangle/her complications” (277).
