In one instance of foreshadowing within SHOUT, Anderson includes a poem entitled “germination” (92). The poem uses mysterious and cryptic language, depicting the process of Anderson’s plan to escape from her tension-filled home. The reader does not yet know it, but Anderson is about to float to her parents the idea of studying abroad in a foreign exchange program.
