When Anderson is speaking to the reader about her experience of being raped at age 13, she prefaces the story by evoking notions of traditional innocence and childlike joy. In order to accomplish this goal, Anderson introduces the sensory detail of "candy-flavored lip-gloss” and the allusion of the Welcome Back Kotter character "Vinnie Barbarino" (52) in order to paint a portrait of what trivial and fun things should have been occupying her mind in her youth, rather than the traumatic memories of rape.
