Arina is from Russka. She is the daughter of Maryushka and the Cossack Andrei Karpenko. At the age of twenty-five, she marries a carpenter and icon painter named Daniel. Daniel had changed his name from Stepan, and he had been a Cossack and friend of her father. Arina and Daniel are followers of the religious dissident movement Raskolniki. The couple has one daughter, Maryushka.
