Who is Ivan Turgenev from Russian Thinkers and what is their importance?

Ivan Turgenev is considered to be one of the greatest nineteenth-century Russian novelists. He made his name with his 1852 A Sportsman's Sketches (Notes of a Hunter), which was one of the first Russian novels to present the lives of serfs. He spent much of his life in Europe, fleeing the repressive atmosphere of Nicholas I. His short-story, Diary of a Superfluous Man, portrayed discontented upper-class intellectuals, who were unable to find their place in Russian society. His most famous and influential work was Fathers and Sons, which was initially panned by critics.
