Benvolio suggests Romeo would be angry if he heard Mercutio talking about Rosaline, but how does the audience know this is not true?

The audience knows Romeo is now in love with Juliet and has forgotten his desire for Rosaline. Therefore, Mercutio's taunts and invocations in her name would not offend or anger him.
