What does cotton symbolize in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry?

Cotton symbolizes the hope for the farmers in the community. For the Logans, the proceeds from cotton insures they can pay the taxes on ther land. For the sharecroppers, a good crop is the difference between getting by and saving some money along the way.... or destitution.
