Symbolism of the money in Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe

Crusoe initially goes to sea in the hopes of making his fortune. He later establishes a plantation for the same reason. In the end, Crusoe realizes that money is everything, and in some case it's useless..... when you're stranded on a desert island for instance.
