What is the main conflict in Riptide by Douglas Preston?

One of the main conflicts in the novel, Riptide, is Malin's inner conflict about the deaths of his brother and father. Over the course of the novel, he works toward solving the mystery and dealing with his guilt over their deaths in order to face his memories and gain closure.
