What is the author's tone in A Darkness at Sethanon by Raymond E. Feist?

There is a difference in tone and the feeling that the language gives depending on what character is speaking. It forces you to use your imagination, but the writer makes it rather clear what is being said, despite occasional slang. The different style and obvious thought that went into the language makes the story very enjoyable.
