What is the theme in Rifles for Watie by Harold Keith?

Rifles for Watie is essentially a bildungsroman or coming of age story. Jeff has had a rather sheltered life growing up but must mature very quickly when he joins the Union Army. The main theme has to do with growing up. Jeff must face the hard realities of life and war.
