Theme?

One major theme in the novel is love and respect for animals. This theme is illustrated through Jeff's character, as he displays what can be achieved with a positive, trusting relationship. Raised on a farm, Jeff is far more comfortable with animals, particularly, dogs and horses, than some of his fellow soldiers.
