Why was Mariya unable to bless her son bartley?

Maurya tries hard to dissuade her son Bartley from going off to sell a horse. They have not heard about the fate of Michael who has been lost at sea. Maura pleads with Bartley not to go because if Michael is dead, he will be the only son she has left. She cannot bear to lose another son.
