Venters wonders if Oldring is Mormon. What effect would that have on the story?

Venters wonders if Oldring is Mormon and that would give an interesting twist to the story. It is unclear in the beginning of the story just what Oldring is doing, but it later becomes clear that Oldring is working with the Mormons to destroy Jane. If she were Mormon this would fit his behavior. If not, he must be helping the Mormons for money.
