When Jane hears of Venter's encounter with Tull and Venter's tribute to her, she is angry at first. Jane thinks this affront to a Mormon elder is worse that killing Tull, but then she is suddenly taken with Venter's chivalry, for standing up for her, and she realizes that he is indeed a man, not a boy.
