Chase remembers bringing his older brother Johnny to school. I don'y think Chase was especially nice to anyone including his brother before the accident.

Chase genuinely has no attachment to all the actions that caused people so much pain, but he feels horribly guilty for everything he did against his will. He feels caught between wanting to be a good person and being pulled back into his old life by his father and former best friends, but he ultimately decides that he is going to be the one to decide who he is and who he wants to be.
