Refugee

In this section, Josef is still in the ship outside Cuba, now “17 days from home” (147). The ship has been there for three days, yet other ships from Europe have let off passengers and left. The steward who Josef’s father had spit on grabs Josef and tells him his parent's cabin must be searched. Josef is forced to take the men to his family’s cabin and then tear it apart. Afterwards, the stewards spits on the floor and says, “that’s what I think of you and your race” (151). Josef’s father is upset, accusing Josef of lying to him earlier and Josef feels guilty.
