Mahmoud Bishara is one of the three main protagonists in the novel, and is the third perspective from which Gratz writes starting in Aleppo, Syria in 2015. Mahmoud is the older brother of Waleed and Hana, and the son of Joussef and Fatima Bishara. Mahmoud is a Muslim, 12-year-old boy “with a long, strong nose, thick black eyebrows, and short-cropped black hair” (12). Mahmoud has learned to become invisible, whether in class or out of it, “to walk around getting noticed by the Syrian army or the rebels fighting them was just inviting trouble” (12). Mahmoud is very concerned with his brother Waleed and his emotional health. He also transforms from embracing invisibility, to leading the charge for visibility for refugees.
